I think what Gets Me about Ryuki is that the narrative is hostile to him specifically. In virtually any other situation he'd be thriving. He's a smart kid & he's dedicated to his work, he'd do an amazing job on literally any other investigation. Unfortunately, he's a man with a dissociation disorder in a game where the primary suspects are people who believe in the simulation theory.
