Hour 6! Halfway through. This time, let's talk about isekais!

It's a common misconception that modern isekais are all about the power fantasy of being a super badass in a world of normies. And I mean, it is a big part of it. But I'd argue that modern isekais are actually a different kind of power fantasy: the fantasy of starting over.

We are the product of our past. You have X friend because you went to Y school because you grew up in Z town ect ect. That's a history you'll never be able to erase. If you've got a reputation, no matter what it is, it will follow you for the rest of your life. If you're known as "the funny cousin" you will always be the funny cousin of the family. If you are known as "the weirdo of high school" sure you can leave to college but the high school lads will still forever see you as the weirdo, unless you put significant effort into changing that. Haven't you ever wanted to just... leave? Fuck off to college or to another job or another country where no one knows you and you can rebuild yourself from scratch?

That's the power fantasy most isekais offer nowadays. The possibility to start over, but with the experience and knowledge you've accumulated in life. That's why so many isekais start off by killing off their protagonist. It's not about the origin world at all. It's about building a new life for yourself where no one from your old life can find you ever again.

I was gonna talk some more about isekais, but this post is already a decent size actually, so maybe next time. I still have sex hours to go after all, and I didn't plan jack shit so I'll buy time wherever I can.
