Hour 9. I guess I should present the website I'm raising money for?
Pillowfort is a social media similar to tumblr in its structure; you've got tags, a chronological feed, and you can write 15k on one post if that's what fits your fancy. It's got a bunch of really cool extra features though.
First off, communities (similar to livejournal or dreamwidth ones.) If you join, say, the pokemon community, your dash will be filled with not only stuff from people you follow, but also from stuff posted/reblogged on this community. It's basically like following a tag on tumblr. Secondly, privacy features. You can lock your posts for pf-users only, followers only, mutuals only- and you can also lock reblogs or comments as you wish. Thirdly, actual comment sections! You can't add shit via reblogs, but you can have lengthy discussions in comments. Fourthy, nsfw is allowed. It's a blessing in the wake of heavily advertized web 2.0 to see cock unprompted on my dash. And fifthly, no ads. Shit's user-funded, so no stakeholder to please or anything.
So yeah, structurally it's really well made. What makes a social media is, well, the social aspect of it. The people.
Pillowfort is pretty small, meaning if you're here to talk blorbo you're probably gonna have trouble with it cuz there's just not too many people doing it. On my part though, I think it's really cool that it forces you to interact with internet spheres you wouldn't talk to normally. I met a guy who studies social media for a living. A lad who spins yarn as ahobby. Guys who focus on fitness & self-improvement and have never heard about shipping discourse in their life. I can't have lengthy discussions on how xyz aus would work in my fandom, but if I start talking about fandom shit, I can still have really cool discussions with people who know nothing about it who thus have very different things to bring to the conversation. It's different, but I don't dislike it. It also helps that people on pf are generally a lot chiller than anywhere else (I think it's a combo of demographic being older + the block button working way better + comments mean you HAVE to talk directly to someone if you disagree you can't just post something super rude at someone's faceless post.)
So yeah. It's not for everyone, but I like it there. It's my house. I want it to keep running.
This blogathon aims to raise money for Pillowfort, a social media that is entirerely user-funded. If you can afford to, it would be very nice of you to donate some money to keep it running. If you do not have a pillowfort account, you can donate by making an account for 5usd. If you do have an account, you can donate through the donation tab. If you do not have a credit card, you can donate to my ko-fi and I will transfer that money to pillowfort on your behalf. If you cannot afford to donate but wish to see pillowfort for yourself, refer to this post for free invite keys.
