The finale of Wakfu season 1 is one that has a special place in my heart because I mean... the heroes lose. Completely and utterly. Not as in "this is a bittersweet victory" no I mean their one goal was to protect the tree of life and they failed. Nox gets to it. In fact, everything would have been better for everyone if the heroes hadn't fought in the first place.

But that's not what I want to talk about today. Today, I specifically want to talk about the reason why Yugo lost that battle against Nox- namely, the reason why he got distracted by the sight of Ogrest.

Now, quick lore lesson for people who haven't been following Ankama for 20 years: Wakfu (the show) is the sequel to a video game, Dofus (the MMO). The key difference between the two is that the Wakfu era was brought forth by an enormous flood. Now, while the exact circumstances around that flood are unclear (or rather we have many sources that say many contradicting things) the general idea is this: Ogrest, a child who aquired unspeakable power, became consumed by grief after losing a loved one- and due to said power, his grief took the world with him.

Yugo, in this scene, is a child who possesses immense power (thanks to the Eliacube) and is currently consumed by grief over the loss of a loved one (Pinpin) to the point where he is ready to commit murder.

When Yugo sees Ogrest, he stops. Because there's a giant creature here he'd never seen before. Because Ogrest's howls are louder than thunder.

But I think Yugo also stops because, for a second, he's thinking back to all the Ogrest legends he's head before (which we know he's aware of.) I think Yugo stops because, for a second, he's seeing himself in Ogrest. He sees exactly what he's become as he's about to kill Nox: a monster.
